GPT-5.6 Sol API Price Cuts and Developer Costs

OpenAI is cutting GPT-5.6 Sol developer API prices by more than 20% for three months as competition with Anthropic and Chinese AI models intensifies.

GPT-5.6 Sol now costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, down from $5 and $30. That makes generated output roughly one-third cheaper—an important shift for coding agents, automation and other high-volume AI workflows. ChatGPT Pro, Plus and Business subscription prices are unchanged.

This Short explains the token-price changes, comparisons with Anthropic, and why cheaper inference could accelerate AI-agent adoption while putting pressure on frontier-model margins.

What to watch

Input and output token prices can change by different percentages. The resulting savings depend on a workload’s mix of prompts, generated text, and repeated calls. A temporary developer API discount should also be kept separate from consumer or business ChatGPT subscription pricing.
